Astrantia is a stunner in the garden beginning mid-summer and through fall. The flowers have an aura of shimmer about them due to the pale inside of bracts reflecting light back onto the colored center of the flower. There are several varieties planted at JOA and over the years they have been promiscuous. Colors range from deep merlot to near silver-white. This offering is dark pink-red. There is a separate listing for a a lighter ‘Alba’. Astrantia grows just about anywhere, sun, shade, rich soil, dry soil, but it performs best in part-sun. Too much sun and the leaves burn, too much shade and the plant becomes floppy. In any situation it will flower and attracts pollinators, including Alaska bumblebees. Astrantia spreads by clumps and self-seeds. Astrantia is in the parsley family, when you transplant it, smell the roots and you’ll get the connection. Perennial.
