Hostas produce mounds of decorative foliage from spring until frost. They are valued for their tolerance of shade, cold-hardiness, long life, handsome foliage, and easy care. They prefer moist, fertile, well-drained soil. An ideal site is one with mottled shade, though they tolerate complete shade or sun. However, in extreme warm spells, the leaves tent to bleach and or crisp. The clumps may remain undisturbed indefinitely. Hostas may be featured as a single clump specimen or in groups or masses. They can be used to edge a path, hold a steep bank, or as ground cover under large trees. Perennial.
