Meryi is a fair purple to purple-red variety of Primula elatior which is pale yellow. They grow in similar conditions, sun to part shade- part shade keeps leaves from yellowing if it gets too sunny and warm. Rich garden soil is good for them in an area that can stay a little damp, like under airy shrubs. Meyeri doesn’t seem to spread as much as the yellow oxlip, but the clumps do spread. And, they form seeds- these seedlings were sown in fall 2022. If you can’t plant them right away so they get their roots set before winter, store them in a cold frame overwinter-they do want a cold winter. If you do plant them this summer, cover them with spruce branches in the winter-just for extra insurance. If Juneau has another hard freeze without snow cover, these young ones could have a problem with that.Â
