There are many fancy leaf shapes and colors of heuchera in the nursery trade-some survive here, some barley make it, a lot don’t! If you want a reliable variety of coral bells, this native is for you. Heuchera glabra is a short, mounding plant, the foliage is about 6” tall and 12” wide. Leaves are more pointy shapes than some of the rounded-lobed horticultural specimens. Plants send up a prolific number of wire-thin stalks with dainty white flowers up to 10” above the foliage. Their mass of stalks makes up for the smaller sized flowers of the native species. Flowers are long lasting and offer a nice soft texture to rock gardens. The beauty of Heuchera glabra is not over when the flowers fade- the leaves slowly turn rich copper-red for late summer to fall interest. H. glabra seeds easily and clumps spread. Likes good drainage, leaves color up best in sun, it will bloom in shade, yet the leaves stay soft-green. Perennial.
